Biography

Adelita Shirley Grijalva (born October 30, 1970) is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Arizona's 7th congressional district since November 12, 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors for District 5 from 2021 to 2025 and on the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board from 2002 to 2022. She is the daughter of former U.S. representative Raúl Grijalva, who represented the district from 2003 until his death in 2025. On September 23, 2025, Grijalva was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a special election to succeed her father, defeating Republican nominee Daniel Butierez. In a move widely criticized by Democrats, the speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, refused to swear her in, promising to delay the swearing-in until the end of the 2025 United States federal government shutdown, which began the week after she won the special election. She was sworn in on November 12 after a seven-week delay, the longest in congressional history.
